Community Groups

Detailed below are just some of the community groups supporting the Saline and Steelend communities.

Saline & Steelend Community Development Trust

Saline and Steelend Community Development Trust was established in 2013 as a SCIO (Scottish Charities Incorporated Organisation).  It serves as the ‘action arm’ of the Community Council and its robust legal and financial structure allows it acquire land and property and carry out projects requiring significant expenditure.  Two Trustees are appointed by the Community Council.

The Community Council and Community Development Trust maintain a close relationship with other groups that serve local people.  These include Saline Primary School, Saline Church, Saline and District Heritage Society, Saline Environment Group, Saline Horticultural Society, and Saline Toddlers Group, as well as Saline Golf Club and Steelend Miners’ Welfare Club.  Details of these groups can be found by clicking on their page title.

Meets every 4 weeks at 7.30 in Steelend Club: Members advised of dates by e mail. Contact secretary (David Chisholm) for details.

Saline & Steelend Gardening Group

The Club was initially formed in 1905 and known as the Saline & District Horticultural & Handcraft Amateur Society.  The Society’s main event was the Annul Flower Show which ran every year apart from during World Wars 1 & 2.  For many the show was the highlight of the year where our gardeners, bakers and crafters would share and celebrate their produce.

Many villagers were society members and exhibitors over the years and devoted their time and skills to making a great event for everyone to enjoy.  The Show was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid and lack of committee members meant the show  was missed for a few years.  However, following renewed interest from villagers, the Society has been relaunched as the Saline & Steelend Gardening Club.  The change in name reflects a new wider approach to include gardening in the community.

Volunteer Gardeners

The gardeners meet every 2 weeks on a Tuesday morning and look after the flower/shrub beds around the village. If you are interested in joining us please join our Facebook Group where you will see more information about our work.

Flower Show

The Flower Show is usually held on the first Saturday of September each year.  A Show Schedule will be available a few months before the Show and will list the classes under the following categories: Flowers, Vegetables, Fruit, Home baking, Preserves, Crafts, Art & Photography.  We will also include a range of Children’s classes and will work closely with the school to engage our children.

Other Events

We will also work closely with other community groups, particularly the Environment Group to run fundraising and awareness events.  These will include Christmas Wreathmaking and Spring Plant Fayre.  Please join our Facebook Group for information about all our events.

Toys

Saline Pre-School Smilers (Toddlers Group)

Meet in Saline Community Centre.

Highland Dancing

Highland Dancing classes are held every Wednesday from 4.15-5.00 in the church hall and we have spaces for new starts. Highland dancing gives children the opportunity to learn new skills, develop co-ordination, balance, make new friends and most importantly have fun whilst learning Scotland’s traditional form of dance. The dancers will have the opportunity to develop their confidence by competing in competitions all over the country, participating in annual exams and entertaining members of the community through different displays and performances.

The aim of this group is to prepare a Community Action plan that reflects community views and which we can use as a guide for local community organisations in representing the community and in developing the projects that matter most to local people. An Action Plan will focus the community's energies in the direction YOU want, and will be an invaluable tool for for supporting applications for future grants and funding the community projects. Many other communities like ours across Scotland have used their Community Futures Action Plans to successfully bring about changes and improvements such as new play areas, footpaths, youth activities, transport provision, housing ....the possibilities are endless.

Pantry

Saline & Steelend Community Pantry

In November 2022 Saline and Steelend Fabulous Food Pantry was established to distribute surplus food from supermarkets alongside providing locally sourced food in bulk to enable a more sustainable approach to shopping.  It operates as a subcommittee of the Community Development Trust but has its own Constitution and bank account.  The Pantry operates every Wednesday lunchtime and users pay £4 to fill their shopping bags from a wide range of grocery items, bakery products, fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled food, laundry goods and toiletries.  Surplus food collected between Pantry days is available for people to take from cabinets on Saline Main Street. It has a volunteer group of around 30 who collect surplus food five nights a week, sort and store it, set up the tables, help people select, and then clear away.  Tea, coffee and a bowl of soup are provided free of charge and users are encouraged to stay on and chat. The Pantry is welcoming to all and no one has to explain their circumstances.  It is located in Saline Community Centre.

The Community Pantry meets Wednesday in Saline Community Centre from 12-12.30pm

National Women's Register

National Women's Register (NWR) is a national organisation and members enjoy conversation, friendship and fun through participating in online, local, regional and national events, ranging from local group meetings to online book groups to national conferences.

Saline has its own local group and we've been meeting on the last Wednesday evening every month since 1984; we've just celebrated our 40th anniversary. We usually meet in each other's houses and all of our events are informal and social. Our group choose its own varied programme. New members are always welcome.

Prospective members can try up to two ‘taster events’ free of charge before selecting to join affiliated to a local group, or if you prefer you can join NWR as an independent member.

Saline Community Garden

Saline Community Garden (now known as The Drying Green) is a brand-new initiative in Saline. The garden is leased by Saline and Steelend Community Development Trust and managed by Saline Environment Group. The lease was signed in November 2024.

We are very excited to create this garden for our local villages and hope that you will share in this vision. We are planning to partner with other organisations, such as the Primary School, Church, Brownies and Pantry, who will have their own space/growing areas. In addition, we hope to develop sections for the wider community, including vegetables, wildlife friendly areas, herbal, sensory and medicinal plants.

We also plan to have a small community space for events, such as repair cafés and workshops, and/or a cup of coffee and chat. We will have a village meeting soon and would love it if you came along and considered being part of this exciting development. There will be much to do and learn and all volunteers are very welcome whether they wish to come regularly or just for an afternoon!
